Friday Funnies

So on Monday I go under the knife for the first time in my life. No, it's nothing serious like having my spleen removed or getting a baboon's heart. No, I'm getting my wisdom teeth pulled. All four of the suckers. They figured, well, we have to take two of them, so the others might as well join the pulling party.

I'm not thrilled about the procedure, if for no other reason than I had to sign all these forms (one of which included the whole, "yeah, you're getting anesthetized, so there is the chance it could kill you" part). The guy doing the procedure is apparently a total badass, so I'm sure I'll be fine, but I've never been put under before either, so this is a double-dose of unwelcome stress into my life.

Naturally, this means I needed to find some music and comedy to help put my mind at rest, and what better way than with Steve Martin and Bill Murray. Little Shop of Horrors is a classic. Ellen Greene, Rick Moranis, with nice cameos by Christopher Guest and others. But the dentist is a classic bit, and it's only right that I prepare myself for Monday's procedure this way.

Bobby Darin

I've always been a Bobby Darin fan. Not that I can claim to have screamed it from a mountaintop or anything, but when it comes to crooners from the '50s and '60s, he's tops on my list. Mainly because of one song, Beyond the Sea. Love that song. Damn I love that song.

Not that his others were not great, but when you have that one in your pocket, you're doing just fine. It was even better a couple years ago when Kevin Spacey starred, directed, produced and maybe even catered the crew when he made Beyond the Sea, a biographical film about Darin's life. Spacey is a surprisingly good dancer and singer, at least when it comes to covering Darin's songs, so there's an extra talent he can fall back on if he keeps doing shitty movies like KPax and not doing fantastic films like Usual Suspects.

Here's Spacey doing his take on Mack the Knife. Good stuff.

Prop 8: The Musical

Comedy. Musical. Popular actors. Not sure how you could go wrong here.

Of course, I wish they were singing a song about how much of an idiot Sarah Palin is, or perhaps celebrating Obama a tad more, but instead they get to make fun of the sometimes stupid people of California. Well, those stupid people who thought it was a great idea to suppress the rights of its citizens.

I'm all for gay marriage, gay people adopting and whatever the hell else gays feel like doing. My fellow hetero folk have fucked up enough things on their own. The world will keep spinning if gays can marry and have rights. And having rights is what this country is supposed to be about.

So I tip my hat to Jack Black, Alison Janney, Doogie Howser and all the others who make appearances here.
