My Childhood Bastardized

And the hits keep on coming from Hollywood. They are continuing to dip into the well of my childhood (or near-childhood, at least) and take things that I remember and sometimes deeply appreciate and mock sad mockeries or interpretations out of them.

First up is Carrie. This movie doesn't come out until 2013, but let's be clear … it's already been out before. Sissy Spacek rocked the pig's blood dye job, and Travolta even has some appearances. Of course, it's much more remarkable for Piper Laurie's performance as Carrie's cracked-out mother, who makes freakouts over wire hangers look like an innocent bake sale. I like Chloe Moretz and I kinda hope this movie does OK, but I have so little faith in remakes these days that I have little hope for this one.

Next is Evil Dead. This may be the greatest movie of the year or the decade, but to me it's an abomination. Honestly, go the "kids trapped in a cabin that turns into a hellhole" storyline and just call it something else. And I don't give two shits that Sam Raimi is behind this retelling of his classic. There is just no reason to invoke the name and all that is holy with Ash and that character and that run of cult classics. Yes, I may be a little too passionate about Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, but that still doesn't stop this "remake" from appearing like a gory cashgrab.

Trailer Love

I know it's been awhile since I was on the blog. Believe me, it was hurting me more than it was hurting the 8 of you. This most recent class was a real test of skill and time management, so some things had to wait (like blogging, and my career move into synchronized horse dancing).

But hopefully I am back for a bit and ready to dive back into the thick of things. Having only seven posts in September is just bad form. You deserve better, audience of under a dozen.

First up, some recent movie trailers that have caught my attention.

This first one I had no idea even existed. Never heard any buzz or early talk of it, and that is rather rare. So color me surprised when I watched this red band trailer for the 43 Movie. Crazy stuff, and probably 100% ignorant but certain to make me laugh. Hell, the trailer alone got three good chortles out of me. Has the chance to tap into that Kentucky Fried Movie sensibility that all those Scary Movie hackjobs could only dream of touching. OK, perhaps my expectations are a bit high.

Next up is Promised Land. Let's not play games, we live in a world where all things being equal, you put talented people in front of and behind a camera and make some kind of movie about environmental issues, and there is a damn good chance I am going to watch it. This my heroin. Damn you, heroin.

Identity Thief last up for this edition. The premise sounded really juvenile and an easy cash grab for the stars, but then I watched the trailer and my hopes were raised. There may not be much new in this movie that we haven't seen in other places, but damnit whoever cut this trailer did a fine job.

Trailer Love

I'm always intrigued by a good conspiracy theory. Heck, I even created one from whole cloth for our fantasy football league that we still reference to this day six years later. The Kennedy assassination, the Matrix, Roswell, the Pentaverate, (Ok, so two of those are fictional) and others always pique my interest. I would not say that I believe in them so much as I just love watching and reading about them and seeing where they germinate and how they gain a life of their own.

The Conspiracy is a movie posing as a documentary, so it's not really to be trusted (much like a Dan Brown novel). Nevertheless, I like the position this one takes and I think the trailer is cut well to get you  wanting to see more.

Trailer Love

It's been awhile since I loved on some movie trailers. So let's bring back this long-running series with a trailer I stumbled upon the other day.

I'm not really one for "road trip" movies. After having gone to the mountaintop with National Lampoon's Vacation, it's somewhat difficult to imagine anything ever coming close to Clark and Rusty sharing a beer in the desert after giving Audrey her period. Alas, some fine British folk have taken a decidedly alternate take on the road trip movie. I don't want to give anything away because I think watching the trailer says it all.

It looks weird, but it also looks like it could be a lot of fun, in a Shallow Grave kind of way.

Shit That Should Not Be

You all know that I don't read much fiction, but the few authors I do read, I revere. One of them is Lee Child, and his Jack Reacher novels. Reacher is a badass. An ex-MP officer who strikes fear in the hearts of those who wrong others, and is not afraid to put hands on someone who doesn't do right by whatever community he happens to be traveling through.

Look, I laughed a little when the wife's favorite series of books got turned into a Hollywood shitshow. But this is different. This time its my books (well, hers too, since she loves Reacher as much as I do) that are getting messed with, and I'm peeved. Tom Cruise is shorter than my sister I think, and the idea of him playing a 6-5, ass-kicking MP officer sets my teeth on edge. My dog cuts a more imposing figure than Cruise does. And this trailer convinces me that Hollywood is out to destroy anything I hold dear (well, unless it's a comic book movie, in which case they are more often than not knocking those our of the park).

Oh, and I've always had a little crush on Rosmand Pike. So that she's in this movie is probably the only plus going for it. But this movie had such easy potential, and they ruined it. And now it is shit that should not be. And I sure as hell won't be giving Cruise a dime of my money.

Trailer Love

The last time a trailer for a TV show got me jacked up and excited, I was crushed by the massively disappointing "The Killing." And I'm not going back to it, either. But that was a show on AMC, and before that, I cannot remember the last time a major network show got me this excited and scared at the same time. Obviously looks like a promising idea of a show, and the trailer is pitch-perfect. But I have to remember that this is NBC, where shows go to die. So here's hoping that I get to see more than three episodes of this before it gets canceled due to bad ratings, and that it also has a more satisfying first season ending than The Killing. If I were a betting man (and I am), I wouldn't take bets on either of those happening, sadly.

But for just over 4 minutes, I have to admit to being greatly intrigued. I'm not saying smash hit here. Just intriguing. Isaacs is a guy I've liked in a bunch of smaller roles, and BD Wong has always been a favorite since his early days in SVU.

Trailer Love

Time for a couple trailers for movies I am looking forward to seeing.

Moonrise Kingdom is the real gem of this bunch. It's the return of one of my favorite directors, Wes Anderson, he of Rushmore, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Royal Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic fame. My joy runneth over watching this trailer.

The Dark Knight Rises. Nothing more needs to be said. Ever.

Prometheus is the return of Ridley Scott to his Alien days. He denies it's an Alien prequel, but I've read about 26 websites that have broken this trailer down second by second and detailed how the famed director has to be either lying out his ass or this is the biggest lie to viewers since "The Killing." I'm hoping it's the former.

Chronicle is a "found footage" movie about some teens who suddenly discover they are developing superpowers. I loathe found footage movies. Blair Witch was great because it was the real groundbreaker, and Cloverfield was a solid experiment with the monster genre, but I'd say everything else is total shite. Can't stand them, which gives me pause about Chronicle. I'm not saying I'll spend movie ticket money on it, but I'll at least make sure I move it to the top of the Netflix list when it comes out.

The Apple Pushers is the first of my two documentary films. This one looks promising because it's narrated by Edward Norton, and is about getting healthy food to inner-city and impoverished people who normally have to subsist on crap. So I'm thinking good things for this one.

The Pruitt-Igoe Myth is the second doc, and this one is about St. Louis' attempt to build a housing development of the future and instead it turned into a complete urban nightmare. I read a paper about this in college, so I'm interested to see how this turns out.

Trailer Love

I'm showing off two trailers today that are geared toward the wife but for two wholly different reasons.

First up is the trailer for One for the Money. The wife reads these Janet Evananonconcnnovovnivich books like I read UK recruiting news, which is scary since it means I probably have a problem that needs professional help. I've never read any of these novels, but apparently it's all about this woman who has trouble deciding between two d-bags and caring for her alcoholic mother while fighting crime and getting her car blown up more often than our dogs take a crap. I just roll my eyes at the thought of these things, but she got hooked on them from my mother (damn you woman!) and now the wife is converting every female she knows into Stephanie Plum fan.

When the wife gives me the crazy eyes every time I see a trailer for a new comic book movie, I just relax and remember the love she has for this Plum character and how every woman in this nation has craved these novels to be made into moves. Well it's happened and the result is delicious gawd-awfulness.

This movie looks like a steaming pile of grade-A shit. And I know this not only because I know a thing or two about movies, but also because the wife and my mother have screamed bloody murder about Heigl being a insulting choice for this role (she spent about 11 minutes learning that Jersey accent) and complained bitterly about nearly every scene shown in that trailer. Not sure I'll see the wife angrier than if Michelle Bachmann became her adoptive mother or chocolate cake suddenly became a banned substance. Either way, it's pretty hilarious how much she hates what this movie has become.

On the complete flip side is the trailer for War Horse. Some no-name director named Spielberg put this one together, and not only do I have the feeling that I'll be seeing this movie with the wife more than once, but that this movie could single-handedly crush the wife's all-time crying record set by the movie Up. The trailer alone may set her back a few dollars in Kleenex. The woman loves a horse (and who doesn't?), so what can I say? Be brave, my dear wife, be brave.

Trailer Love

I know I'm probably alone when I ask if anyone else who reads this blog has played Portal and Portal 2. The sequel is one of the best games to be made this year, and director Dan Trachtenberg has gone the extra mile and made a faux movie based on the game. This is a similar concept that was a huge success when a brief Mortal Kombat movie was made. This is just a test film to show how cool the idea could be, and nothing more will probably come of it, but in a world where they fuck up film adaptations of popular video games (see: Super Mario Bros., Mortal Kombat '90s flicks, Max Payne, Street Fighter, etc.) it's cool to see a director give a video game the proper treatment.

Trailer Love

As most people know, I'm a huge fan of the documentary Darkon. And like the funny subplot of Role Models, here is a movie that looks to blend the realms of Darkon and the campy humor of Army of Darkness, which means it could hold promise of delivering laughs.

Trailer Love

As a household that relishes Pixar films, I have no doubt that the wife will want to see this post-haste when it is released. This is just a teaser trailer, but considering that it's co-directed by a woman (first time ever for an animated film), is based (apparently) in Ireland and an apparently badass female lead (a rarity in animated movies), I'm sure the household will unite around this film.

Trailer Love

A couple trailers to movies I am really looking forward to:

X-Men: First Class

What can I say, I'm a geek for comic book movies. And though I'm still excited for Thor (despite the trailers that make it look campy without the self-recognition of camp) and also Green Lantern (trailer looks like a video game I would likely pan), I'm really thinking this prequel trilogy they are trying to setup with X-Men is genius. Allows for new characters, new actors and good shorelines to set it all up.

Make Believe

You know me, I am a sucker for a good documentary that delves into weird worlds. Enjoying magic shows (mainly card tricks, screw the Cris Angel bullshit) is one of those dirty secrets of mine, and so I think this doc could be great in either two ways: 1) it's a good doc that highlights young people doing magic; or 2) Is a new Trekkies and Darkon for the laugh factory. Either way, I win.

30 Minutes or Less

Because I can't get enough of Jessie Eisenberg or Michael Cera movies yet. I'm still OK with just about any movie they are doing. Do I care that they are reruns of the same kinds of characters, only in different cities with different costars? Not one bit. Go ahead, tell me Social Network, Zombieland, Adventureland, Scott Pilgrim, Youth in Revolt and Superbad aren't good. Go ahead, but know you are lying to yourself. You lying liar.

Trailer Love

This trailer is too damn funny. Even if it's not actually real. But with all the winks and nods to the original "Harry met Sally" movie, and the fantastic appearance by Tyson, and you can't go wrong here.

Trailer Love

Putting the Rubber trailer in my Friday Funnies inspired me to check out some other newly released trailers. This one, for Super, looks promising as well. It's like a stripped-down version of Kick-Ass, only with (from what I've read) more humor, more cursing and Ellen Page just being a hilarious bitch and murderer. Sounds like a winner to me.

Friday Funnies

This is a hybrid Friday Funnies. I wanted to put this under it's normal home of Trailer Love, but instead I ended up laughing through the trailer enough that I thought it warranted double-duty, and so now it's living under Friday Funnies this time. It's a trailer for Rubber, a comedy/horror movie that looks crazy and yet fun and gory all at once. It's pretty much the story of a rubber tire named Robert. Robert has been abandoned and discovers he has telepathic powers. You'll understand more when you watch the trailer, but it looks like the movie has an inventive take on the horror/comedy genre, and I have to say I'm intrigued by it. Plus, the idea of the tire stalking someone in the shower is pretty damn funny.

Trailer Love

For some reason this week a ton of movie trailers are being released for films I am interested in checking out. Can't let all this trailer goodiness go down with sharing it with all eight of you who read this blog.

First, the serious stuff. Countdown to Zero looks right in my wheelhouse of activist thought-pieces.

Next up is a goofy-looking action film. But anytime you get Helen Mirren shooting people to the sounds of a classic Aerosmith tune, you've at least peaked my interest.

This next one looks cool. I can't say I was a Ginsburg connoisseur or anything, but I've read Howl before and am familiar with a few other works of his. Plus I like some of the roles Franco has been doing these last 3-4 years.

One more and we're done, and this is for the uber-geek in me.

Trailer Love

I don't remember when I first watched the Winnebago Man clip at the bottom, but it was a long time ago. But I do remember that it reminded me why I left Kentucky (with its copious amounts of RV ads for RV dealers in southern Indiana) and also that this guy may be one of the coolest cats on the planet.

Anyway, when I heard that a documentary was being made about the search for this guy, I thought it could be pretty cool. Then I saw the trailer for the doc (at the top) and I was instantly hooked. Cranky midwestern guy with a foul mouth that only I can challenge? This could be some cool shit indeed. Mark me down for a 'yes' on if I will be seeing this movie.
